  • Unground Genre Trends: The Sounds Shaping the Future of Music

POST-PUNK REVIVAL Post-punk revival is a genre that draws inspiration from the post-punk music of the late '70s and early '80s, but with a contemporary twist. The genre is characterized by its raw, energetic sound, politically charged lyrics, and a DIY aesthetic. Some of the most popular post-punk revival bands include Fontaines D.C., an Irish band known for their poetic and politically charged lyrics; Idles, a British band known for their raucous live performances; and Shame, another British band who have gained recognition for their intense and confrontational shows. DARKWAVE Darkwave is a genre that emerged in the '80s and is characterized by its moody, atmospheric soundscapes and gothic aesthetic. The genre draws inspiration from new wave, post-punk, and synthpop, and often features haunting vocals and heavy use of synthesizers. One of the most popular darkwave artists is Cold Cave, a project led by Wesley Eisold, who has been active in the underground music scene since the '90s. Other notable darkwave artists include Drab Majesty, a Los Angeles-based band known for their retro-futuristic sound, and Zola Jesus, a Wisconsin-based singer-songwriter who combines darkwave with elements of industrial and experimental music. PSYCHE POP Psychedelic pop is a genre that has been around since the '60s, but has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. The genre is characterized by its dreamy, otherworldly sound, often achieved through the use of reverb, echo, and other effects. Some of the most popular psychedelic pop artists today include Tame Impala, an Australian band known for their trippy, psychedelic sound and use of vintage equipment; King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, an Australian band known for their prolific output and experimental approach to music; and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, a New Zealand-based band known for their blend of psychedelic pop with elements of funk and R&B. WITCH HOUSE Witch house emerged in the late 2000s and is characterized by a mix of dark wave, industrial, and hip hop, with lyrics and themes inspired by the occult, horror movies, and witchcraft. The genre takes its name from the use of occult and witchcraft-related imagery in the artwork of its artists, as well as from the association of some of its artists with the occult. One of the most prominent artists in the genre is SALEM, a Michigan-based trio who gained recognition for their experimental and often unsettling music, as well as their use of chopped and screwed vocal samples. Other notable witch house artists include ∆AIMON, CRIM3S, and White Ring. FUTURE FUNK A subgenre of vaporwave, future funk emerged in the early 2010s and is characterized by its use of funk and disco samples from the '70s and '80s, which are often pitched up and looped over electronic beats. The genre also incorporates elements of Japanese city pop and anime soundtracks. One of the most popular future funk artists is Yung Bae, a producer from Portland, Oregon, who has gained a large following on YouTube and SoundCloud. Other notable future funk artists include Desired, Macross 82-99, and Saint Pepsi.
